Understand your MFM care

Short, straightforward explanations of common high-risk pregnancy topics. This introductory content is not a substitute for your care team.

What is maternal-fetal medicine?

Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists are doctors with extra training in pregnancies that need closer monitoring or specialized care. Your regular OB-GYN or midwife often stays involved.

Why might I be referred?

Reasons vary. They may include a medical condition, an ultrasound finding, a past pregnancy complication, or the need for a closer look.

What happens at a visit?

Your visit may include a health review, an ultrasound or other testing, and a talk about next steps. The plan depends on your situation, and not every visit includes meeting the specialist.

Before your appointment: Write down your questions, bring a list of your medicines, and ask how and when you will receive test results. If you need an interpreter, ask for one when you schedule.

Each of these topics has its own lesson in the course.
