Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered simply

General educational answers to common MFM questions.

Does “high-risk” mean something will go wrong?

Not necessarily. “High-risk” means a greater chance of certain problems during pregnancy, childbirth, or after birth. It does not mean a problem will happen, and it is not a judgment of you or your choices. Your care team can explain what it means for you.

Why was I referred to maternal-fetal medicine?

There are many possible reasons, such as your medical history, a condition in this pregnancy, or a finding that needs a closer look. Ask the clinician who referred you what prompted the referral.

What happens during an MFM appointment?

Visits differ. You may have a health review, an ultrasound, and a talk with the MFM specialist, or only some of these. Ask the clinic ahead of time what to expect, and ask who will explain your results and when.

Will my regular OB-GYN or midwife still see me?

Often, yes. Your regular provider and the MFM team may share your care. Ask who handles which part, including your birth plan.

Who do I contact if I'm worried between visits?

MFM clinics usually do not have an after-hours line. Your regular OB-GYN or pregnancy care team is usually your first call, including nights and weekends, unless you were told otherwise. They can reach the MFM team if they have questions. In an emergency, call 911.

What should I ask my care team?

Four questions can help in almost any situation: WHAT happens next? WHY is it recommended? WHEN should it happen? WHO should I contact with questions?

Can I ask for an interpreter?

Yes. You can ask for a qualified medical interpreter. Ask when you schedule your appointment so the clinic has time to arrange one. You can say: “I would like a medical interpreter for [your language], please.”

When will I get my results and visit notes?

Some results may be shared at your visit and others take longer. Visit notes and summaries often appear later in a patient portal. Ask: “Who will explain my results, and when should I expect to hear from them?”

Can GestaClara tell me what my results mean?

No. GestaClara provides general education, not individual result interpretation, diagnosis, or treatment recommendations. Your healthcare team can explain your results.
